POSITION DEFINITION AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Under direction, performs routine work in caring for and maintaining park grounds, athletic fields/turf and related equipment, recreational areas, facility grounds, and other landscaped and lawn areas; performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Learns to keep lawns, gardens, parks and other outside areas healthy and visually appealing. Trims and cuts grass and hedges. Operates lawn mowers, weed wackers, edgers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, hedge trimmers and other equipment associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities; performs minor maintenance on mowers and other equipment including changing oil, lubricating parts and making adjustments.

Marks athletic fields and other recreational/game areas; fills holes in playgrounds; regrades ball fields; keeps play area free of debris and dangerous obstructions. Waters trees, shrubs and lawns. Picks up refuse and litter from grounds. Plants and maintains shrubs, trees, and flowers; prunes trees and shrubs. Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas, sweeps walks and spreads salt. Rakes leaves and debris. Sets up bleachers. May operate motorized or electric snow removal equipment.

Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals. Constructs, assembles, positions and makes minor repairs to various playground, park and sport equipment. Paints signs, benches, tables, bleachers, and other items as required. Maintains and makes minor repairs to hand tools, automotive and

mechanical equipment, and facilities. Mixes and pours cement and/or rakes asphalt (cold mix) to repair and patch walks or recreational areas such as tennis courts. Loads and unloads trucks. May clean restrooms. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Type of employment: Temporary Appointment, not to exceed 6 months
