CAPE MAY COUNTY COVID-19 CASES UPDATE

5/18/2020
Data from NJ COVID Dashboard and CMC Health Department Updated through 5/17/2020

Here in Cape May County (and throughout the state) we continue to see the percentage of new cases of the virus (and sadly, deaths) largely growing in our Long Term Care Facilities.

Here in New Jersey, numbers in LTC continue to track at over 20% of all cases and over 52% of all lives lost due to COVID-19 in the state.

Here in Cape May County, these numbers, one again, have grown even more pronounced.

So lets’s look at CMC numbers from 4/28 to 5/17.

4/28 – Total CMC Cases 305
Long Term Care 108 – 35% of Total Cases

5/3 – Total CMC Cases 344
Long Term Care 149 – 43% of Total Cases
Of 39 new cases – 31 were in LTC – 79%

5/10 – Total CMC Cases – 458
Long Term Care 248 – 54% of Total Cases
Of 114 new cases – 99 were in LTC – 87%

5/17 Total CMC Cases – 503
Long Term Care – 294 – 58.5% of Total Cases
Of 45 new cases – 31 were in LTC – 69%

OF 198 NEW CASES OVER THE PAST 3 WEEKS
161 HAVE BEEN IN LTC – 81.3% OF ALL NEW CASES SINCE 4/28/2020

It is always worth repeating…The breakdown of these numbers is not meant to minimize the tragedy, suffering and sorrow caused by this virus in our Long Term Care Facilities. Many of us, myself included, have close friends and family who have lost loved ones in our County Nursing Homes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected. THIS IS A NATIONAL TRAGEDY!

But from the beginning, the purpose of these updates has been to try and give a clear picture of the state of the spread of the virus HERE, in Cape May County and use these numbers to develop an unemotional calculation of the risk, when it comes to developing plans to reopening our world.

To summarize, as of 5/17/2020

Cape May County had 503 total cases/41 deaths

That translates to…
0.34% of NJ total cases / 0.39% of NJ total deaths

Of those total cases – 58.5% are in LTC (+4.5% SINCE 5/10)
Of those total deaths – 78% are in LTC (+3.2% SINCE 5/10)

With 209 positive tests (outside of LTC) to date, 0.22% of CMC year-round residents (outside of LTC) have tested positive for COVID-19

2/10th of 1%

Once again, we are blessed to report, most of these folks have recovered.

So at this point, we have 112 active cases (a net gain of 5 over last week)

THAT’S 0.12% 0F THE YEAR-ROUND POPULATION IN CMC
