(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight lane closures and traffic shifts on Route 9 beginning tonight as a pavement preservation project between CR 634/Rio Grande Avenue and Egret Trail advances in Middle Township, Cape May County.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, June 15 until 6 a.m., the next day, and continuing nightly Monday through Thursday for approximately three weeks, NJDOT’s contractor, Asphalt Paving Systems, is scheduled to close one lane on Route 9 with alternating traffic beginning at CR 634/Rio Grande Avenue and moving north for approximately two miles each night. Work will begin in the northbound lane with alternating traffic using the southbound lane, and then move to the southbound lane with traffic using the northbound lane each night within the two-mile section.  Flaggers will be used to direct traffic during paving and state troopers will assist at intersections.

The closures and traffic shifts will allow for the application of tack coat and a fast-drying slurry seal on Route 9 mainline and shoulders, in both directions, to preserve and renew the pavement.

The $2.4 million federal-funded project will repair, preserve and restore the pavement to improve safety and enhance ride quality for motorists on approximately eight miles of Route 9, in both directions between Rio Grande Avenue and Egret Trail in Middle Township, Cape May County. Work includes the application of new rumble strips, reflectors, asphalt repairs, upgrading and replacing damaged and substandard inlet grates and curb sections as needed.

Variable Message Signs are being used to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
