Construction update of Bayshore Road at Lower Township/Middle Township Border

Notice of Construction Update and Anticipated Reopening of Bayshore Road (C.R. 603) at Lower Township/Middle Township border
Work on the Fishing Creek Culvert emergency contract will continue thru the week of March 29th
.
After further inspection by the County Engineer, it was determined that the original triple 36” cast iron culvert pipes were in need of replacement in their entirely, and work began on March 10th. The emergency project includes the removal and replacement of the existing storm culvert pipes, the installation of new headwalls and foundation slabs, the installation of wingwalls, the installation of scour countermeasures, backfilling the culvert excavation with stone and resurfacing the roadway.

As of March 25th, the contractor has replaced the pipes, installed the foundation slabs and headwalls, and backfilled the excavation. The contractor will be working extended hours as well as Saturdays to expedite the remaining work. Prior to Sunday March 28th, the contractor expects to have installed the westerly wingwalls and scour protection with the expectation of restoring temporary flow across the culvert by Saturday night. The balance of the remining work, including resurfacing the roadway, is expected to be completed by April 7, 2021. Until that time, Bayshore Road will remain closed to traffic and the detour of Bayshore Road will remain in place. All local business will remain open and accessible.

The County will post a final update if the scheduled of opening Bayshore Road changes.

Middle Twp. announces new date for community event to mark COVID’s impact

Candlelight vigil, tribute to essential workers now set for March 20 after weather delay

Cape May Court House, N.J. – Middle Township has postponed its outdoor community event to reflect on one year since the start of the pandemic to Saturday, March 20.

Officials rescheduled the ceremony because rain is in the forecast for the original event date of Tuesday.

“COVID at One Year: Light After Darkness,” held at the Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex, will mark a year since the shutdowns and other pandemic-related developments that abruptly reshaped our lives.

The community is invited to safely gather at the recreation complex beginning at 6 p.m. March 20. Members of the public are expected to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. The event will culminate with a candlelight vigil at sunset to remember all Township residents lost to COVID.

As visitors arrive, two large monitors near the stage will show some of the most poignant images from the last year, including scenes of modified events and photos of community members helping one another.

Along with live performances of the national anthem and other songs, the event will include remarks by Township Committee members, and a plaque presentation to Cape Regional Medical Center. Additional awards will acknowledge the courage and contributions of essential workers in various fields.

Anyone who does not attend in person will be able to see the event live streamed on the Middle Township Facebook page.

Check the Middle Township Facebook page for additional details that will be shared closer to the date of the event.

Road Closure and Detour – Bayshore Road (CR 603)

Notice of Road Closure and Detour

Bayshore Road (C.R. 603) at Lower Township/Middle Township border
On Tuesday March 9, 2021 the Cape May County public works department discovered a sinkhole
forming in the north bound shoulder area of Bayshore Road (C.R. 603) at the Fishing Creek culvert
crossing. Upon further inspection by the County Engineer, it was determined that the subbase under the
northbound lane and at least a portion of the south bound lane had scoured out, leaving the asphalt
paving surface unsupported. As a result, Bayshore Road was immediately closed at this location and a
detour has been established until emergency repairs are completed.

North bound Bayshore Road thru traffic wishing to access Del Haven and/or Route 47 will be
detoured east onto Fulling Mill Road (C.R. 654) to Route 47. Traffic will then proceed north on Route 47
where motorists can access Bayshore Road and proceed up to Rutledge Avenue of the Del Haven
Section of Middle Township or simply continue on Route 47 heading north.
South bound Route 47 traffic approaching Bayshore Road and wishing to continue as thru traffic
south on Bayshore Road will be directed to continue along Route 47 south to Fulling Mill Road (C.R.
654). Traffic will them be directed west onto Fulling Mill Road back to Bayshore Road where they can
continue heading south.

Local north bound Bayshore Road traffic will be permitted to continue north on Bayshore Road to
Miami Avenue and will be permitted to proceed to the Lower Township senior citizens center. There will
be a full closure at the culvert crossing. Likewise, local south bound traffic on Bayshore Road
approaching from Route 47 will be permitted to continue to travel south to Rutledge Avenue in Middle
Township and will be permitted to access County Park South. There will be a full closure near Rutledge
Avenue on the north side of the culvert crossing as well. All local business will remain open and
accessible.

The County has developed a work plan and has entered into an emergency contract to make the
necessary culvert and roadway improvements. Due to the extensive nature of the work, it is anticipated
that repairs will take 2-3 weeks and this portion of Bayshore Road will remain unpassable until the
repairs are completed. Motorists are advised to account for additional travel times.
