Military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country will be remembered during Middle Township’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.

The parade begins to line up at 9 a.m. and starts at 10 a.m. on May 30. A ceremony will follow to remember service members with a recitation on the poem “In Flanders Field,” a rifle salute, “Taps” performed by the Middle Township High School Band and music from the Dennis Township Band. Soloists will sing “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

The event also will have kids showing their creativity with a bike-decorating contest for those 12 and under and an essay-writing contest for the community’s fifth graders.

The kids’ bike decorating contest has divisions for ages 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Those under age 3 can ride in a decorated stroller or wagon. Judging begins at 9:20 a.m. Mayor Tim Donohue will announce the winners of the bike decorating contest at the event.

“What Memorial Day Means to Me” is the theme of the essay writing contest for Middle Township’s fifth-grade students. Teachers will provide instructions to their students, and the essays will be judged by American Legion Post 198. Winners will participate in the parade and read their essays during the Memorial Day Ceremony.

The parade will begin at Memorial Field on Pacific Avenue. It will continue North on Boyd Street, turn left on Mechanic Street, left on Dias Creek Road and end at the American Legion Post 198. The ceremony will be held after the parade at Post 198.

Those interested in participating in the parade or the bike decorating contest need to pre-register by May 27. Registration forms can be completed online at middletownship.recdesk.com/community/home or can be returned via email to nmcdevitt@middletownship.com.
