Middle Township residents can tune in to the Miss America Pageant tonight with a sense of hometown pride … and a contestant to root for!

Miss New Jersey Alyssa Sullivan is a lifelong resident of Cape May Court House and a 2014 graduate of Middle Township High School. Sullivan has the honor of representing New Jersey in the 100th anniversary of the Miss America Pageant, which, of course, launched on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. This year’s competition is being held at the Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville, Conn.

The vocal skills she developed in MTHS musicals and choral performances were on display Monday night, as she performed “Gimme Gimme” from “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in the preliminary Miss America talent competition.

Middle Township celebrated Sullivan with a proclamation shortly after her state pageant win. July 7 was designated “Miss New Jersey Day” in the Township in her honor.

“I know I speak for all of our residents when I say we could not be more proud of Alyssa and her accomplishments,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “She truly personifies the spirit of giving, community and hard work that make Middle Township such a special place to live.  We all wish her the best luck on the Miss America stage this week!”

Sullivan is a 2020 summa cum laude graduate of Rowan University, where students currently are digitizing 100 years of Miss America archives. She majored in journalism and interned at local and national news outlets before becoming a production coordinator for PHL17 in Philadelphia.

Sullivan is passionate about her social impact initiative, Peer Challenge Commit 2 Character, and frequently speaks to local students about the long-term impacts of their decisions. She visited Coastal Preparatory High School and Middle Township Middle School last month, where she discussed topics such as high-risk behavior and peer pressure.

Faith and community involvement are guiding forces for Sullivan, who was a founding member of the ACT Now Youth Group at Our Lady of the Angels Church in Cape May Court House. Her community service has included working with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Toys for Tots in Cape May County.

The Miss America Pageant will stream live on Peacock at 8 p.m. tonight.
