Notice of Lane Closure on Ingram’s Thorofare Bridge along Avalon Blvd (C.R.601) – September 19th, 2020

Notice of lane closure on Ingram’s Thorofare Bridge along Avalon Boulevard (C.R. 601)

On Saturday September 19th the Ingram’s Thorofare Bridge will be restricted to one lane of alternating traffic between the hours of 9:00am to 3:30 pm. Traffic will be maintained using flaggers in order to alternate traffic along the bridge. The lane closure is necessary in order to permit an under-bridge platform truck to provide access for bridge inspectors.  The inspection is part of a routine biennial inspection that is mandated by the State of New Jersey. Due to the availability of equipment and the need to perform the inspection prior to the upcoming lane restriction associated with the phase 2 deck replacement of the bridge, the inspection has to proceed on Saturday. Two-way access will be maintained on Saturday, but motorists should expect delays.

Middle Plans Traffic Calming Measures at MLK Rec Center

MIDDLE PLANS TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES AT MLK REC CENTER

On Wednesday, September 9th, Middle Township Committee will vote on the first of several measures planned to slow down traffic around the Martin Luther King Recreation Center in Whitesboro.

An ordinance to create a four way stop at the intersection of Main St and George St would slow traffic coming off of RT 9, headed west toward the Recreation Complex.

Further safety measures would include traffic calming striping, additional signage, solar-powered digital speed monitors, no parking directly in front of the MLK Center and two asphalt speed tables.

Speed tables are mid-block traffic calming devices that raise the entire wheelbase of a vehicle to reduce its traffic speed. Speed tables are longer than speed humps and flat-topped, with a height of 3-3.5 inches and a length of 22 feet. Plans call for two speed tables, one to the east and one to the west of the MLK Center entrance.

“We look forward to getting this important roadway safety initiative underway,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “Making  folks more aware of the need to proceed with caution and just slow down around all of our recreation facilities is an ongoing priority for Township Committee.”

Middle Reluctantly Cancels Harvest Festival 2020

MIDDLE RELUCTANTLY CANCELS HARVEST FESTIVAL 2020

Middle Township today announced the cancellation of the 2020 Harvest Festival, citing public health and financial concerns. The Township had been considering a scaled-down event, but drastically reducing the number of vendors and attractions would make the event financially unsustainable.

“As with all our events, we worked hard to find a safe and sensible strategy for putting on the Harvest Festival during this Public Health State of Emergency,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “With the plan we’ve used the last several years, the event paid for itself. A smaller event, at risk of being cancelled due to the ever-changing state of COVID-19 restrictions, would be a financial risk to our taxpayers that we can not afford in this challenging economic environment.”

The Township will work to develop some alternative events for the fall, more inline with the current restrictions on large crowds.

Sadly, this is the times we live in,” said Committeeman Jim Norris, who oversees Recreation and Special Events. “We regret the necessity of this decision, but public safety has to come first. We look forward to restarting our Harvest Fest tradition, even bigger and better in 2021.”

Whitesboro Post Office to Hold Ribbon Cutting as Tribute to Historic Community – September 5th 9am

WHAT:  The new Whitesboro Post Office opened to the public in mid-July, but will receive an official welcome from postal representatives, community leaders, and elected officials at an upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony. The building means more than just convenience for residents: It preserves the historic Whitesboro ZIP code that dates to the early 1900s. Congressman George H. White of North Carolina established Whitesboro as a place for Blacks to purchase a lot, build businesses and homes, and create a community of their own, away from barriers they faced elsewhere.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 5, starting at 9 a.m.

WHERE: 6 E. Main St., Whitesboro NJ 08252 (GPS address: 9. E. Main St., Cape May Court House, NJ 08210)

DETAILS: Speakers will include a representative from the U.S. Postal Service, Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue, and New Jersey Assemblyman Antwan L. McClellan. Those dignitaries will join members of the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro to cut the ribbon with a supersized scissors.
